Between April 2024 and September 2025, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, working with Support Staffordshire and the Historic Environment team at Staffordshire County Council, have been exploring the feasibility for a new scheme that will create landscape-scale change in the Trent Headwaters.
Working with experts and local people, we have done a deep dive into our natural and cultural heritage, learning about what makes Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands so important. We have spoken to communities, met local people and engaged local organisations to better understand what the needs, prioritise and opportunities are in this landscape.
We will use this research to design a new scheme to deliver positive change for people, wildlife and heritage. In partnership with local organisations, we are developing a 10-year vision to Transform the Trent Headwaters.
The outputs from our learning are documented on this page.

Our 10-year vision and long-term aspirations are set out in our Masterplan We have documented what we have learned and discovered about the River Trent and its headwaters in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands and how we will use this information to make genuine and impactful change in the future. A new scheme of work will be planned, designed and developed using the information set out in this Masterplan.
Our Community Engagement and Advocacy Report sets out what matters to the people who live and work in the Trent Headwaters. We have learned about the communities who thrive here and what challenges they face, as well as why this landscape is so special.
Our in-depth community consultation, Community Conversations, was undertaken by Support Staffordshire and VAST. Some valuable insights were gathered and some exciting projects ideas gathered.
